About Saturn

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest in the solar system and has the most spectacular ring system of any of the gas giant planets.  Scientists say Saturn's atmosphere is primarily made up of hydrogen and helium and is orbited by 82 moons, the most moons orbiting any planet in the solar system.  Of these 82 moons, Titan is the largest  of them all.  Saturn was imaged by the Pioneer II spacecraft in September 1979 and then by Voyager 1 and 2 during the next two years.  Much information was learned about Saturn from these past missions with the most recent being the Cassini Equinox mission which included the Huygens probe landing on Saturn's moon Titan in January 2005.  The Huygens took a number of images from this moon for scientists to study.  The Cassini Equinox mission ended on September 15, 2017.
